Cigarettes After Sex: Beauty in Simplicity

The self-titled debut full length album from Cigarettes After Sex was released over six months ago. I’m certainly familiar with the literal idea of cigarettes after sex, but the music of Greg Gonzales’ band, born in El Paso, Texas ten years ago, only recently flew onto my radar. Hints of Beach House immediately drew me in, but the more I listened, the more I heard the stylings of classic 90s Mazzy Star, updated with fresh modern guitar tones and beauty expressed most prominently through the softness and simplicity of the music.

Another similarity to Mazzy Star is the consistency in sound and mood throughout this album. If you love the first track, K., you’ll love the whole album. The drawback is that it’s hard to pick a favorite.

Cigarettes After Sex will be at Union Transfer in Philly on Tuesday, April 3. Details here.
